Paid online photography courses¶
Schedule reset: use the 35-week study map for 28 September 2026–30 May 2027. Any older month/week labels below describe the previous topic sequence, not the active calendar.
These are focused supplements, not a replacement curriculum. Prices and access models were checked on publisher pages on 23 September 2026 and can change by region, tax, promotion and renewal terms.
Reasonable-price rule¶
- Prefer an owned course or free resource first.
- A one-month subscription is reasonable when it solves a specific active problem and can be cancelled immediately after the study block.
- Treat a one-off course above US$100 as poor value unless it covers a verified gap that free material and existing courses do not.
- Do not start multiple subscriptions at once.

Advanced one-month pathway¶
If the foundational assignments are already consistent, a single month of Visual Education offers the best ratio of cost to advanced practice:
- Creative Portrait Lighting Techniques and Part 2 — reverse-engineer deliberate multi-light portraits instead of collecting setups.
- Combining Natural and Artificial Light on Location — control ambient colour, direction and exposure while making the added light look intentional.
- Choose one environmental-portrait case study and produce a portrait that explains the subject through location, not merely background decoration.
- Finish with a portrait critique session and compare the feedback criteria with the programme’s 0–2 review score.
The advanced threshold is practical: complete a lighting diagram, make a test frame for every source separately, explain what each source contributes, and remove any light that does not improve the image.
Topics that do not need another paid course yet¶
- Natural light and flash: the owned Ghionis courses, Neil van Niekerk articles, Strobist and the selected YouTube workshops already provide enough material for Months 1–2.
- Children and families: use the toddler walkthroughs, family posing seminars and safety material before considering a specialist paid library.
- Couples and weddings: the owned material, wedding articles and Month 6 rehearsal should reveal whether a later purchase is justified.
- Portfolio and critique: practice, review and targeted feedback are more valuable than another passive course during Month 7.
No purchase or trial has been started. Course quality assessments are based on publisher syllabi and the programme fit, not full lesson-by-lesson viewing.
